At home we have now managed to get our wireless working fine, the only problem is that we have to go downstairs onto the old pc to print, is there any way to enable us to print straight from the lap top?

Yes.

I had to this this for my network.  On the laptop go to Control panel>Printers.  Select Add Printer.  Select "Add a printer on a network or attached to another computer".  Go through the prompts.  That should do it.

But I really wanted to be able to do it without the main computer being on - I haven't got a network enabled printer - it just has the normal printer ports (It's a year old Cannon thing) - is it possible to buy some sort of add on to make it a wireless network printer or do I effectively need to buy a wireless printer? Yhey seem very expensive....

You can by wireless printer servers.  Small box similar to your wireless modem/router.  Some wireless routers do have printer ports to plug non wireless printers into them.  Lots of options, all are gonna cost between 50 and a ton.

Don't take IT advice from anyone who can't use the quote function properly.

I click the quote button, that is all.  I think I have various bb code stuff turned off in my profile.  I'd sort it out but I'm saving that for when I get really bored and my forearms hurt too much.
